The best two-player games are titles that could only exist as two-player experiences. Taken together, these cards provide plenty of strategic value to each hand. Ones will usually lose you the trick-but let you play first for the next trick. Every 11 card forces your opponent to play their highest card of that suit, while each seven card gives the winner of the trick one point for each seven in the trick. Every three, for instance, allows whoever played it to change the trump suit right there in the middle of the hand. The other wrinkle is that some cards in each suit have special powers. What you absolutely don't want is 4-6 tricks or more than 10. So the game is about managing your hand to win either no tricks or a moderate amount of tricks. Win 0-3 tricks in a hand and you gain six points win 7-9 tricks and you gain 6 points but win 10-13 and you gain nothing at all (you were "greedy"). In most of these games, you want to win as many tricks as possible with your hand of cards, though here it's more complex. If you can't "follow suit," you can play a card from any other suit-and one suit per round is always a "trump" suit that tops any other suit whenever it appears. This is a standard trick-taking game, where players each lay down one card per round (called a "trick") and the highest card wins that trick. But that's the magic of The Fox in the Forest, a wonderful trick-taker designed specially for two. It’s a great game to play with family or friends, but fantastic to play with your romantic partner on Valentine’s Day.įind out more about The Fox In The Forest Duet at BoardGameGeek. If you've played games for a while, you probably know that trick-taking games rarely fare well with two players. It’s a unique and rewarding experience, and not just because it’s one of the few two-player cooperative board games available. However, it says a lot about being a human in such a small package. The Fox In The Forest Duet is easy to learn and plays in about 30 to 45 minutes. When partners are successful, it’s through cooperation and mutual understanding. Players achieve proficiency in The Fox In The Forest Duet not simply through strategy or tactics, but by knowing your partner and their habits better. And, also just real life, the more you practice, the better you get. Likewise, leading is just as much responsibility for your partner as it is an opportunity to do what you want. Understanding what your partner wants and needs is critical, but you can’t neglect your own wants and needs. Just like the nuanced interplay of two partners in a relationship, Duet is all about reading your partner. This is what makes The Fox In The Forest Duet such a unique experience. The challenge of the game lies in how players subtly signal to each other about their cards, and what to play. Players have to be as sly as a fox to figure out what card to play, deducing what the other player has played thus far. Here’s the tricky part: as players are trying to play the correct cards to move their Team Token, they can’t speak. Fall off the path three times, and both players lose! Playing cards carelessly, though, will push the Team Token off the path. Skillfully maneuvering to the correct spots will net a gem token for the players, bringing them one step closer to winning. Players use their cards to move their Team Token up and down the forest path. The Duet version of The Fox In The Forest adds some new variables to the formula, though. Too few tricks each round, and you won’t make any progress too many, and you undermine your own plans. In each round, players want to capture exactly the right number of tricks. Both versions reward precision and prescience more than brute force. The new Duet version inherits the same Spades-like trick-taking gameplay from its predecessor, along with its special three-suit deck. The Fox In The Forest Duet is a cooperative game that casts players as a pair of foxes racing through a faerie forest, collecting as many gems as they can before the Seelie Courts catch up with them.Īs the name implies, The Fox In The Forest Duet is a descendant of 2017’s hit two-player game The Fox In The Forest. There’s a two-player board game that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day, as well. Wanna mix it up a bit? Wanna try something unique, memorable, and intimate, but also something you can tell your parents about? A two-player board game is just the thing you need. Fancy dinner, romantic movies, Instagram pics, these are tried and true Valentine’s traditions. Valentine’s Day is here, and it’s time to do something special with that special someone in your life.
