The result This work will contribute to the body of knowledge on elements important in the design of educational games by identifying specific strategies employed in top-rated games to facilitate specific learning requirements.Travel back to the time of Hercules, an ancient Greek hero as he embarks on a great adventure to rescue his kidnapped wife from the clutches of Hades the ancient god of the underworld. How I implement my solution Using methodology adapted from reverse engineering called 'instructional decomposition', both macro and micro design elements can be identified. How I tackle this problem By treating the COTS game as though it had been deliberately created as an educational game, it becomes possible to identify the learning requirements for the game as well as the strategies used to support that learning in a form suitable for examination as instructional design. What the literature says about this problem Although current literature often cites examples from COTS games to support claims about how games teach and there is a growing body of research on the use of games in formal learning situations, the main focus has been on the learners and there have been no comprehensive detailed examinations of how specific games teach. The problem (that I tackle) However, the best games are designed for entertainment and not education, and while they teach effectively, their designs are not expressed in educational terms that could be used by designers of instructional games. Ultra-brief Summary (Single Sentence Summaries:) Introduction (area of study) In order to design educational games that remain effective as both games and as learning objects, it is necessary to understand how successful games teach. It can be concluded therefore that games cannot be designed element by element due to their interconnecting relations and thus necessitate a holistic review. Detailed review of the 6 components revealed that the design of one element affected all other elements. The Story element of LOH determined the structure of all other game elements, in particular the elements of Goals, Rules, and Challenges. The current study analyses the game in terms of its key game elements: Story, Goals, Rules, Challenges, Interaction, and Feedback. The educational components of the game include the visualization of Hercules’ journey to different locations in Europe and the labours themselves as well as player interaction in order to complete the labours. The game is structured in 12 levels of increasing difficulty, each featuring the two phases of running and boss fights. The player takes the avatar of Hercules, whose goal is to complete the 12 labours. One such ICT product is the educational 3D mobile game “Labours of Hercules” (LOH), an output of the European Union Erasmus+ project developed to teach the myth of the Twelve Labours of Hercules to students. The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has been shown to engage 21st century learners in the learning and education process.
